Prof. Dr. Slavenko Grgurević

In memoriam — Prof. Dr. Slavenko Grgurević

Our dear member and friend

Prof. Dr. Slavenko Grgurević

On the third of September, after a long and difficult illness, we lost our dear colleague, friend and a man of great spirit — a visionary, a fighter, devoted to EWB, and one of our first and most dedicated members.

Prof. Dr. Slavenko Grgurević was an economist and researcher. He spent the greater part of his career at the Institute of Economic Sciences in Belgrade, where from 2002 to 2005 he led the project “Economic Cooperation (Bridges) between Serbia and Other Countries of the Former Yugoslavia and the Balkans” — a theme that defined his entire body of work. He was the founder of the Eurobalkan association, dedicated to regional cooperation and European integration, and a member of the working group of the National Convention on the European Union. He also represented the economic and political interests of the Western Balkans internationally.

All of this — a belief in regional cooperation, in bridges rather than walls, in dialogue as the only way forward — was why he embraced East West Bridge as his own. He was with us from the very beginning and remained one of our most devoted members.

Your kindness, your wisdom, your inexhaustible energy, your charm, your word — whether it came as praise or as criticism — your understanding of people and of the world… all of it will be missed more than words can hold.

Our sorrow is great, deep and quiet, because you are no longer among us. But our pride is just as great, for the privilege of having known you, of having been part of your path, of having heard your thoughts, your visions, your view of the world. For all of it, dear Slavenko, we remain immeasurably grateful.

The memory of your kindness, your work, your professorial breadth and our time together remains with us, a light that time does not extinguish. It was an honour and a privilege to know you, to work with you, and to share moments of life with you. Such people leave a mark that cannot be erased.

The funeral service will be held on 9 September 2026 at 12 noon.
